The Symbol of Faith (I BELIEVE) and its interpretation
Tthe Creed is a short confession of our faith in which the basic doctrines of Christianity are presented in a concise, clear and authentic manner.
We say "I believe" mainly in the Sacrament of Baptism but also in the other liturgies. By this the baptized are recognized from the unbaptized.
In the beginning there were many Symbols: of the Apostles, of Saint Athanasius, etc. What we have today is called the Symbol of Nicea and Constantinople because it was established in the 1st and 2nd Ecumenical Councils and is the only one used by all Christian orthodox denominations. It summarizes what every Orthodox Christian should believe.
It consists of 12 articles (verses). The first 7 took place at the First Ecumenical Council. The remaining 5 in B. In the first 9 articles the verb 'believe' dominates, in 10 the verb 'confess', in 11 and 12 'expect'.

THE CREED TEXT NEW GREEK PERFORMANCE 1. I believe in one God, Father, omnipotent, creator of heaven and earth, visible and invisible.
I believe, as an orthodox Christian, in one God, Father, Sovereign of all, who created heaven and earth from nothing and with absolute freedom and love. That is, he created both the visible and material world and the invisible and spiritual world. 2. And to one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages? Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father, through whom are all things happened.
I also believe in one Lord, the God-man Jesus Christ, who is the only-begotten Son of God the Father
and was born of Him eternally. He is light, as is His Father. He is true God, because he was born of true God. The Son is not a creation or construction of God, as various heretics believed, but has the same Divine essence as the Father (he is "of the same essence") and all things were created through the Son. 3. He who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnated by the Holy Spirit and Mary the Virgin and became human.
The Son of God, for our salvation, came down from His heavenly glory to earth and took flesh, like ours, from the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. In other words, he became a man similar to us in everything, except for sin, and he lived for a certain time on earth. 4. Crucified for us under Pontius Pilate and suffered and buried.
He was crucified, suffered and was buried for us, when Pontius Pilate was the Roman procurator of Judea. 5. And he rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures.
And he rose, according to the Bible, on the third day from the grave, while he was dead. 6. And having ascended into heaven and sat down at the right hand of the Father.
After His Resurrection He ascended to heaven with the power He had as God, thus glorifying human nature. He ascended and sat down at His Father's right hand. 7. And coming again after glory, he judges the living and the dead? of the kingdom there is no end.
He will come again into the world in glory, at a time known only to God, to judge the living and the dead. And His Kingdom will have no end. 8. And to the Holy Spirit, the master, the life-giver, the one proceeding from the Father, the co-Father and Son worshiping and glorifying together, they sang it through the prophets.
I also believe in the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Holy Trinity, who has dominion and authority. He animates all creation and emanates from the Father. He is consubstantial with the Father and the Son. He is worshiped and glorified equally with Them. He guided the Prophets of the Old Testament, who foretold the coming of the Savior. 9. In one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I also believe in the Church. It is one, because its head, Christ, and the faith of those who participate in its life are one. She is holy, separated from all sin. It is universal because it holds all truth and wants to include all people. It is apostolic, because it preserves the teaching of the Apostles unadulterated and because the bishops who shepherd it are their successors. 10. I confess in baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
I confess a baptism in the name of the Holy Trinity. With this we begin the new life in the Church. By this the original sin is forgiven. 11. I expect resurrection of the dead.
I believe and wait for the common resurrection of all the dead. Each body will be resurrected to be united with its immortal soul. The resurrection of all will take place at the Second Coming of the Lord. 12. And life of the age to come. Amen.
I expect that, after the resurrection and final judgment of all men by Christ, I will be qualified to enjoy eternal life, together with all the saints. Amen.

Το Σύμβολο της Πίστεως (ΠΙΣΤΕΥΩ) και η ερμηνεία του
Το Σύμβολο της Πίστεως είναι σύντομη ομολογία της πίστεώς μας μέσα στην οποία παρουσιάζονται περιληπτικά, με σαφήνεια και αυθεντικά τα βασικά δόγματα του χριστιανισμού.
Το «Πιστεύω» το λέμε κυρίως στο Μυστήριο του Βαπτίσματος αλλά και στις άλλες ακολουθίες. Με αυτό αναγνωρίζονται οι βαπτισμένοι από τους αβάπτιστους.
Στην αρχή υπήρχαν πολλά Σύμβολα: των Αποστόλων, του Αγίου Αθανασίου κ.λ.π. Αυτό που έχουμε σήμερα λέγεται Σύμβολο της Νίκαιας και της Κωνσταντινούπολης γιατί θεσπίστηκε στις Α΄ και Β΄ Οικουμενικές Συνόδους και είναι το μοναδικό που χρησιμοποιούν όλες οι χριστιανικές ορθόδοξες ομολογίες. Αναφέρεται περιληπτικά σε αυτά που πρέπει να πιστεύει κάθε ορθόδοξος χριστιανός.
Αποτελείται από 12 άρθρα (στίχους). Τα 7 πρώτα έγιναν στην Α΄ Οικουμενική Σύνοδο. Τα υπόλοιπα 5 στη Β΄. Στα 9 πρώτα άρθρα κυριαρχεί το ρήμα ‘πιστεύω’, στο 10 το ρήμα ‘ομολογώ’, στα 11 κ 12 το ‘προσδοκώ’.

11. Προσδοκώ ανάστασιν νεκρών. | Πιστεύω και περιμένω την κοινή ανάσταση όλων των νεκρών. Θα αναστηθεί κάθε σώμα για να ενωθεί με την αθάνατη ψυχή του. Η ανάσταση όλων θα γίνει με τη Δευτέρα Παρουσία του Κυρίου. |
