Up to almost 15% - 20% rise compared to 2022 - Prices in supermarkets and butchers for arrowroot and farmers' backlash against the government

This year's Easter table will be particularly "spicy", which is expected to be up to 12.6% more expensive compared to last year, which tests - in addition - the endurance of citizens, who have to deal with an accumulated situation of punctuality, which continues unabated.
Increases in food for the Easter table may affect consumption and Easter turnover in many other retail sectors, such as seasonal gifts, toys, candles, chocolates, children's clothing and footwear, which make up a large part of Easter holiday spending. Based on research carried out by the Consumer Institute (INKA), this Easter the festive table is estimated to be 12.6% (or 38 euros) more expensive than last year. Specifically, the Easter table for 6-8 people, according to INKA, will cost 334.05 euros, while last year it cost 296.25 euros. It is noted that the Easter table includes, among other things, meats (lamb and chicken), vegetables, stews and cheeses, various other products and soft drinks/alcoholic beverages.

The high prices

From then on, despite the beneficial policy of Georgiadis for the supermarkets, the prices of Obelia remain at a very high level. In fact, yesterday the prices for lamb started from 9.69 euros per kilo and for goat from 9.98 euros per kilo in supermarkets, according to data from the Ministry of Development. Last year in supermarkets the prices for lamb ranged from 9.80 to 9.98 euros, while for goat it was in the range of 10.69-10.90 euros per kilo.

As for neighborhood butchers, prices for lamb this year start at 11 euros per kilo and for goat close to 12 euros per kilo, even exceeding 15 euros. "It is not possible to make the lamb available at 10 euros" say the butchers, emphasizing that they buy from cooperating breeders at 8-8.5 euros per kilo and now rely on the quality product, but also on the relationships they have developed with their customers. Last year in the butchers the price of lamb started from 11.50 euros per kilo and reached 15 euros per kilo, while the price of goat varied between 12.80 and 15.50 euros.

On Friday, April 7, the prevailing wholesale price for lamb and goat was 9.2 euros per kilo, according to data from the Central Markets and Fisheries Organization. On Great Monday, the corresponding prices were set at 9.30 euros for lamb and 9 euros for goat. Last year on Holy Monday (18.4.2022) the prevailing wholesale price for lamb was 9.50 euros per kilo and for goat 9.80 euros.

Reaction of breeders

From the first moment it was announced that the lamb and the goat were included in the "Easter basket", a storm of reactions arose from the breeders, who pointed out in all tones that the cost of production this year is close to 10 euros per kilo, compared to 8.5-9 euros per kilo last year, as a result of which they cannot make available this year lamb goats for Easter at a cost of less than 9 euros per kilo per carcass.

The rest of the table ingredients

The price of dyed eggs (ten) ranges from 4.50 to 6.45 euros, while last year it was 3.50 to 3.95 euros. Beyond that, the rest of the products on the Easter table are also more expensive, such as potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, mustard, feta cheese, olive oil, soft drinks, beer and wine. At the same time, the cost of the candles starts from 5 euros and exceeds 100 euros for those that are accompanied by a toy, with the increases compared to last year even reaching 15% for branded candles. Chocolate eggs start at 8.5 euros (150 g) and even reach 40 euros, depending on the weight and whether they include a toy.
