Do you get inexplicably nervous around people who do any of the following? Are they drinking, chewing gum, chewing, biting their nails, swallowing, making noises with their mouths, breathing heavily, whistling, snapping their fingers… or generally MAKING any sound?
For some, just reading all of this together is a reason to get irritated! And if you think you're just weird, we'd like to inform you that it's a condition and it's called "misophonia". Misophonia... A real disorder or random symptoms? "Misophonia", that is, the hatred of specific sounds, was first described in 2002 by scientists Margaret and Powell Jasteboff from Emory University in Atlanta.
"I can't stand it when I hear someone munching on popcorn with their mouth open. I mean, I really can't stand it," Dr. Barron H. Lerner, professor of medicine and population health at New York University Langone Medical Center, wrote in the New York Times.
In 2013, a Dutch study identified the most frequently annoying sounds we make when we eat, breathing sounds and hand sounds.
The reactions of misophonia ranged from irritation and disgust to raging rage that sometimes manifested itself in verbal or even physical attack on whoever provoked them.
Early scientific findings suggest that the cause of misophonia is hyperconnectivity between the auditory and limbic systems of the brain, a part of it responsible for producing emotions.
However, there are other studies linking misophonia to mental health problems such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress syndrome. Of course, there are also sufferers who do not face any mental health problems.
On the website www.misophonia.com there are several ideas that may help "sufferers".
The first step in dealing with it is for the sufferer to try to understand why a particular noise bothers him so much and then to do what he can to tame his reactions.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy, in which patients learn to distract themselves or "block out" their hearing, can help with this, and moving away from the source of the sound can also help.
The exact analysis of the word is obvious. You hate every sound!!
But people who suffer from misophonia, not only do not want to hear sounds, but they get irritated for no apparent reason and without measure, with those who cause the sounds! Try as they might, they can't push the noise away, and their rage grows as the irritating sound continues, to the point where they can become rude in order to find their peace!
It is a serious condition that goes beyond just not liking certain sounds. Through these "unpleasant" sounds, strong emotions are caused that can have serious effects even in personal relationships as the reactions can become very intense!
Often, it affects our relationships with very dear people and we end up getting hurt feelings!
The workplace can become a battlefield and your literal hell when you suffer from misophonia. It's not a place where you can be rude, you have to be careful and measured and this adds stress and pressure to you in combination with the unpleasant sounds so you can't concentrate on your work!
Many do not understand the battle these people fight to stay calm and not become aggressive, and certainly comments like "get used to it", "get over it", "get over it" do not help at all!!

Is there a solution?
It's not one of those things that you can take a pill and go away. But there are ways and techniques of self-improvement, in order to limit it and not affect your life to such an extent.
But before everything, you should talk to your friends, your family and your environment in order to prepare them and explain the situation to them.
The people who care about you will definitely make sure to help you and not aggravate the situation!!
And if you're not sure if you suffer from misophonia or not, watch the following video and at the end, you'll know for sure!
